Filming issues

After Christmas I will be awaiting a operation on my knee this means that I either need to get lifts to filming as I'm supposed to stay at home or I can try and make sure we have finished filming by the time I have my operation

Gaining Permission to film

We have just gained permission to film in both the school campus and the library. The answer from the school was instant, but the library have given us the go ahead after we have signed some papers so we will have to wait until we can get those papers in our possession. This next photo is of our headteacher Mr Lord given us permission to film and shaking my hand. George was taking this picture.

Results from location scouting

these images from around our school are the results of our location scouting

These images show the areas within school that we would like to use as a set in our music video. The next stage is to ask permission from our head teacher and the head librarian to film within these areas.

Location scouting

Today me and George are going around school taking photos of possible locations for our music video. We are also trying to gain permission to film within the school campus and within the Werrington library

Camera we are using for our music video

GZ-HM310BEK
Because we have found out in the past that the cameras provided by school can be difficult to use when trying to get the best image possible, we have decided to use my Dads camera which has full HD and also digital stabeliser. This feature is a improvement on the cameras that school provide as even if the camera is on unstable ground it will be able to focus on the target and move with the target not the camera. This was a problem with the schools camera as even when a tripod was used it would still shake even if it was from a slight wind. The audio capabilities of my Dads camera is unknown at this point but it does not provide us with any problems as all the audio and background noise will be added in when it comes to editing the final piece of work.

We will be using schools cameras to film the behind the scene video to use in our Evaluations

How to link the video with lyrics

This video by K.I.G called Head Shoulders Knees N Toes, is made by a hand held video camera similar to the ones that we plan on using. This video was not made of high quality but was huge because of the link between the dance and the music. Throughout the whole of this video there are different locations and people used but the same dance used. This is all in sync with each other and the song which is about the most complex throughout the entirety of this video. This is an example how we can use simple ideas to make a great music video and also add the key features from the codes and conventions of a music in which we plan to add into our project.

How to make a music video without using a huge location

In the video You Need Me, I Don't Need You by Ed Sheeran is the perfect example how you can make a great music video without having to move anywhere in between shots. This music video uses one studio to film the whole video. This is because there is no backgrounds or props which means that you can tell a story without having to move. This is done by the changes in lighting which surronds the main targets in the video. This video is not just one camera shot though. There is mutliple camera shots including, Long Shots, Medium Shots and Extreme Close ups. This mixes up what the audience is viewing and keeps them on their toes visually. The different shots and changes between the number of people on the screen or who is on, as for example Ed Sheeran does not appear on the screen until right at the end, where he is still masked by the dark lighting that is present throughout the whole video.

Lighting and how it represents characters

In this music video the lead singer plays two different characters of different temperaments. The lighting for the character who is portrayed as a rock stars, the lighting for this character is really loud when it comes to the colours but other than the actual light which is shone onto the characters and the people around him. The rest of the lighting is dull and dark. His opposing character is a polite middle class character who wears bland colours and very clean lighting showing his "innocence". This is consistent throughout the video until they class at night when the are arguing in the middle of their two houses. The lighting becomes very dark and shows a aggressive nature between them. This kind of lighting would be good to use in our music video to define the characteristics of our characters without them having to say anything.

Transitions relating to music.

At the beginning of this music video the cuts between camera shots are very fast and last less than a second to match the tempo of the beginning of the song. There is also a link between the shots of the guitar and the drums. The majority of the transitions are at the same time as the main drum beat. Throughout the song the actions of the characters are also very brief and strong to match the music. Throughout the song the only transitions are straight cuts, because the tempo of the song. This is true to when it slows down at 1:29 when the character walking through the halls she slows down just before pushing a boy with a arm in a sling. Then when the tempo picks up again the cuts increase all the way through until the end of the song where there is a confrontation between the paramore band and the character in the video. Some cuts also change to the same sequence but with a different lighting, almost like a fade to white. at about 2:30 when the guitar solo happens the cuts between the story and the band increases even more. Still at the end when Hayley Williams confronts the main character her actions are very strong and fast. The longest time in this sequence without at cut is the end scene where the music has stopped and the character is left crying in the middle of the halls. Then the final fade is to black.

Looking at Camera shots

In the video Lego house by Ed Sheeran, There is a mixture of camera shots that are used within the video while the story is unfolding throughout the song. The main character in the story is linked to the lyrics by the miming and the shots him writing the lyrics onto a notepad. There are also shots where the camera tracks the characters movement from different angles such as when he is walking towards the stage. The close up shots that are used with this video, helps show the emotion that was going through the character.
After the turning point where you get to realise that the character is not Ed Sheeran but a wannabe who is in love with Ed Sheeran. After this point the lighting becomes less focused towards the character but the image of Ed Sheeran. The camera is unsteady in most of the shots throughout the music video, which adds to the effects of the unsteadiness  of the character in focus. The cuts and shots also all relate the beats and speed og the song. The transitions that are mainly used in this video is straight cuts or fade to black. This is something that I am looking to use.

Up date on how are storyboarding is going.

This is just another video of our storyboard to show how it is improving in both the amount of work done and the detail within it. We are taking on our time with this part of the project as we need to show every single shot that we plan on using in our music video.

Production roles being filled up

After this weekend I have managed to fill a position of a hair stylist, a make up artist and a lighting expert/ techy, These positions were mainly decided because we don't believe that many actors are going to want me or George to be doing their hair or make up, in case the end up with inverted Mohawk and clown make-up.

This is just an image not our hairstylist!!!!

Nerd Love lyrics

Here are the lyrics of Nerd Love. We dicided to choose this song because of the lyrics. The lyrics are quite meaninful in terms of how a couple fall in love no matter what you look like or how you are as a person. This song shows that a normal girl falls in love with a nerd, even though people laughs at him, she still falls in love with. This song gives meaning of falling in love but has a comical side to it, this gives us an opportunity to give a proper video of two people falling in love but give it a funny twist to it as well.

Meeting arranged to fill cast spaces

I just visited one of the Drama teachers about who i could use for the actors and extras in our music video, she then organised a meeting between either me or george next friday to choose our cast.

Maisie Mae IS NOW ON YOUTUBE

Maisie Mae has now decided to post her songs onto YouTube, this video is only consisting of a picture yet by the end of this project it will be a full blown music video.

Creating our Storyboard

After completing the research into music videos we have now decided to start planning properly for our own project. After writing a plot for the project the next task was to start creating a storyboard to show in detail every shot we are planning on placing within our video. The video filmed by George only shows me producing the storyboard as this stage is going to be a long process to get every shot within in the story board and then to add the details in writing once the drawings have been scanned onto the computer so that there is no problems such as not being able to read our handwriting.  We are aiming to get this completed in the next couple of weeks once we had put all the information about the transitions and audio to be added on top of the music we are using. We plan to have the drawings on their own to be completed by the end of this week so we can go over them in pen and add colour in order to scan them onto the computer. Once we have finished all of our work in this area we will place the storyboards onto our blogs and then start with the shooting script and location scouting.

Improving our green screen skills

This video shows use using the new green screen that our school has ordered after some polite persistence by our media group. Its not the best quality because we did not iron the chroma key sheet before using it. This means that if we use an iron before using the screen before using it we can get a professional look, if we use a better camera though.

The reason why we are using this is we are thinking of using the chroma key when we are making our music video, yet we will defenitly be using it when it comes to evalutating our prodject at the end of the course.

Green Screen Update

After having our subject teacher order the green screen so we could further the techincal ability of our music video and coursework. It has now been delivered to the school and we have just had a look at it. We will be putting it together sometime in the not too distant future to break it in and see how it can be used to further our grades.

Presenting our Initial Ideas to our class

To get some audience feedback we needed to pitch our ideas about what we wanted to do with Maisie Mae'ssong. We pitched three different ideas about how the story could flow but as our audience commented in this video they were really similar although our teacher backs us up when he says that because we can only use this one song given to us by the artist and the story that it is within the lyrics its hard to come away from those ideas. He also mentioned how normal the exam board dislike videos being shot in school as too many people do this although this time it would be an exception.

Overal our audience leaned as well as me (who is almost completely off screen the whole time) that pitch 3 was the best idea. We believe that we should take these views and take it with us as we move closer to filming our video.

Making our first green screen

after failing in previous attempts we tried again and managed to make a green screen affect the actual video has no relevance to our topic just to show that we can produce work in this method. This means that when we next decide to Analise something we can use this method.

Letters to students about Music Video

After being sent the list of the students in dance and drama, I now need to send the people on the list a letter informing them of what we are asking them to do and whether they are interested. The following image shows what the letter will look like.

Analysis of websites: Paramore

As the key concept of a website is its useablility the website needs to be clear and easy to navigate. On the paramore website this piece of critirea is met as you can see from the image above the website is structured into different sections so that there is no confusion to the target audience. The strucure consists of boxes where as most other websites do not show the grids used so obviously.
This website however does challenge the concept that the middle of the page is for the main information where as on this website there is only a video and the images with I believe is linked to the bands album cover. Every aspect of this website is split by this grid alothough there is no visible seperations. This makesd the website seem informal and is aimed at more of the younger audience rather than the stuctured rigid formaty that you may see if you were to visit the BBC NEWS website.
In this website the includes factual information about the tour dates and recent news on what is happening with the band at present time. Although this text is not formatted like what you may see in a Broadsheet it still is factual as it is not gossip that you would find in a Tabloid. Although these conventions are met one I cant see is the genre. At a first look there is not much that tells the audience that this website is for a band other than the name and that their is tour dates on the website. This is because there is no real images of the band other than the one on the pause of the video in the center of the page. When comparing this to other band pages this does challenge the codes and conventions of the website layout but it does not increase its poulairty as it has changed the way it shows the genre as it makes it more difficult for the audience to see what the genre is and then what to expect from it.

Email regarding possible actors and dancers.

I sent an email to the schools head of performing arts regarding whether there was any chance that i could have a list of dance and drama students that i would be able to use in our music video.

At first after a week of asking I had to send this following email to remind the teacher of our agreement.

Green Screen Fail !

Just literally ten minutes ago we attempted to make a green screen for our next analysis although we then found out that the wall painted green for us, had a large window in the middle.
Trying to sit underneath the window to solve the problem but then we found out that the wall made us sit too close which completely ruined the shot.

Analysis of websites: David Guetta

This website which belongs to David Guetta a french DJ. When you first eneter the website and you land on the home page. The majority of the page is taken up by image with different features that a dotted aroung the main image. The main tool bar is on the left which is right on top of the advertisement that they have plaed about some DJ awards. This imrpoves the useablitiy as the images that are aimed art grabbing the attention of the audience then leads them to the navigation bar.
The images are also surronded by links to socail networking sites and other links such as advertisments which are involved with the Dj himself.
Unlike other more conventional websites the middle is not used to place a main artical instead it is all images that seem to link with the a colour theme but there is no indications. This could either make it confusing to rthe audience or for those who are fans of David Guetta to anticipate what to now expect.

As this website has been created for entertainment purposes and not for the news, the layout does not protay a clear structure although when looking more closely at the website you can see that each set of information is in a box that is surronding the page. This therefore meets the codes and convetions of the layout and the way the website targets the audience and to attempt to address them approprately.

Anaylsis of websites: Katy Perrys website

This website shows consideration to the target audience as the website follows the conventions in term of the layout and design. This is because the is a clear stucture to the layout of the webiste with each section clearly shown. The grids include the images and videos in seperate sections where the audience are allowed to inetreact with the links shown. The tool bar is then across the bottom because of where all of the other sections lead down to this.
In this website the pain space is taken up by the images of katy perry and her logo which is across the top of the page. This clearly shows the audience of the genre which is pop music as it clearly links the picture of katy perry with the image of her to the left. Then there is a link to the images and video links further down the page. This shows that she is in fact the artist and allows people to expect what is to appear on the website as they interact with it.
This website also addresses the target audience in the right away this is beacuse the website comes acorss almost like a fun games website as there is not too much text on the home page like there would be on a news website and there is no huge titles to each link like there would to a gossip magazines website.

Analysis of websites; Six Revisions

With this website for Six Revisons' band website the framework that is used meets the codes and covnentions of the layout and design that I had previously posted. This is because the website has the layout that would have been created by using a grid format with the tool bar at the top of the page and with the area in the centre of the page to allow the audience to interact with the website itself.
This is because there is no real images focusing on the band other than an image with one of the artists next to an article in the centre area of the homepage. When comparing this to other band pages this does challenge the codes and conventions of the website layout but it does not increase its poulairty as it has changed the way it shows the genre as it makes it more difficult for the audience to see what the genre is and then what to expect from it.

Analysis of Websites codes and conventions

The codes and conventions in terms of layout and design
The key concept in an effective web design is the usability; therefore websites need to be clear and easy to navigate.
A grid section is used to separate sections of a website and to present information in small, easy to access segments.
The centre of the page is often used for main content with navigations tools on the left and/or across the top of the page and links to more detailed information on the right.

The technical codes used
Certain technical codes are now common place on websites. Many sites provide moving image or audio content and also provide some form of audience activity. Sometimes this is related to the content of the site so film marketing sites offer downloads such as music and images whereas news based sites provide areas for audience members to comment on published news stories.

The codes and conventions in terms of content of websites
Websites which contain factual information will look differently to those created for entertainment. There are distinct conventions in terms of news websites, film promotion websites, websites promoting health advice etc.

Genre Codes
In addition to the content leading layout design choices, where websites based on existing genres such as rock bands, horror films and broadsheets would have a recognised framework aimed at making sure the audience recognise the genre and have appropriate expectations

The way codes are used to target the audience and attempt to address them appropriately
Differently audience may find certain layout and design choices more appealing. A key issue with website is the way they attempt to encourage audience activity and interactivity to attract audience in and persuade them to return or pass important information to the website producers.

list of jobs for music video

For our music video we have thought to include other people that can use their skills from other areas to improve the quality of the music video. Antoher reason for wanting to get other people to do certain jobs for us is that if we have people doing jobs that may not be within our skill set we can focus more on making the video for our artist and concerntrating on the main task at hand. This can also give people and opportunity to get experience to help them improve their skills or even to put on their C.V.

The jobs we would like to bring people in from outside are:

  • Make up and Hair artist of some kind
  • Actors to play both main roles and possible extras
  • Artist to help make props and paint the back drop
  • People to either help make or find costumes
  • People to help with odd jobs like controlling sound equipment who may be interested in a carrer with media.

List of whats needed for Production

This list is off the items, facilities or people we think we will need to create the Music Video.

Equipment and Facilities ( no specific order)

1. Facility to use as a set which we can turn into whatever setting we wish for the music video.

2. Two digital cameras which allows footage to be downloaded onto a computer

3. A microphone which allows speech to be heard clearly for when we film behind the scenes for our video.

4. A set of lights which can be used to place behind props and the camera to help change the conventions of the video.

5. A reflector than can be used to reflect light around the set.

What we are going to need to create the music video

In order to improve the organisation of the process of creating the music video. We have decided to create a list of equipment and personnel we think we will need throughout the production and how it is going to be used to insure we create the video sufficiently. The list is going to be split into two sections and then those sections are going to be split as well. The first two sections are Production and Post Production and then within those two areas will be equipment and personnel.

Analysis of Similar Products: Music Videos

This music video by Scouting for Girls is a product in which can have massive similarities and differences between themselves and other artists. Just as for other Artists this is the same for Maise Mae. In both of the songs that Maise sings and the ones that are performed by Scouting for Girls the lyrics to the song acts as a narritive to a story the artist wishes to either tell or make the audience apart of/ relate to.
In this instance we are looking at how the video tells the story which then relates to the lyrics as this video inperticual has caught my eye by the way it has been set out and how the director has made a humours side to the story. This is different because if you were to listen to the lyrics which used within the song you would not think of the song as a happy or lightened story, whereas the video depicts the story as a typical love story but with a funny side to it, for example how nobody really changes over time, which is shown by the same clothes being worn by both the children and the adults.
In this video the emotions are shown by the bright colours that are present thoughout the whole video, and unlike most music videos the artists do not appear in this sequence once. Also everything that happens seems like it is happening in the same setting whereas each even unfolds in a different place. The reason it all seem the same is that everywhere the music video takes the audience the colour of the grass, sky and buildings are almost the same and makes the audience believe that the characters which are within the story never change anything about themselves and the love triangle is present throughout the whole event.
In Maisie video we could use the idea of the costumes being very colourful and retro to lighten up the story while the song narrates it. The best song for this would be Nerd Love as this song shows a similar story line but a more happier one. The story would have to be slowed down with the tempo of Maise's song but then we can also do this by slowing down the speed between changes from one shot to the other and also the movement of the whole video, between all the characters.

Analysis of Similar Products: Music Videos

In this video by Amy Winehouse there are a few similarities to what comes across in Maisie's work. An example of this is how both artist use there music to depict upon a story. Amys lyrics in this piece of music tells the story of how she is getting over an ex and how she wishes to place her feelings in a box and let them go. The lyrics also touch on how people have depicted her. That is similar in the way maisie's song nerd loves tells a story of how the boy she meets in the video is a nerd to everyone else yet she falls in love with him when she looks under neith the exterier.
In this video the way the story is told is done in two parts. When Amy is shown in a dress and holding the guitar she is acting as the narater to the story who is looking on it as a third party. Yet then amy also appears within the video walking through the scenes as she is part of it. Within the video there is a great deal of movement when Amy is not shown narrating the video. All of the camera shots with this movement is focusing on Amys facial emotions. The only exeption to this in the video is when someones hand is drop coins onto a small disco ball. This however is different from when Amy is narrating. The camera shots when amy is narrating varies between closeups on amys face to a long shot of the whole of Amys body with her holding the guitar. Within this video the lighting stays resonably dark although the this challenges the Goodwins theory as the music that is beeing played is not dark or linked to any form of heavy metal. Although it does show the emotions of not being happy within the lyrics. The costume that Amy also wears when she is narrating counteracts the lighting and the emotions that are carrued with it as she herself is wearing a bright red dress. This can represent the love that she is singing about within the song or shows hope that she is moving away from the sad emotions about her breakibng up with her partner.
When comparing this to what we could be doing with the video when it comes round to Maisie's video, i think we would change the way the lighting depicts the emotion in the song as Maisie's song is about something good and the emotions would be positive. This means that the lighting would be bright or just normal standard lighting and the colours would either be really bright and loud or just normal. The idea of the facty Maisie could be both narating and playing through as a charcater in the video would make her story easier to follow

Analysis of Similar Products Music Videos

This is the Video from Taylor Swifts song Mine.
In this video the Lyrics to the song have a narative that matches with the narative of what is going on throughout the music video. As both the song and the video shows the story about a troubled relationship of both past and present for the main character who Taylor Swift plays. The setting of which Taylor is shot allown singing also compliments the video as the couple within the music video move to a house surronded by trees itself. The footage is cut to make it seem that there is a link between the what taylor swift is singing and doing on her own and what is going on in the story of the video. There is a great deal of movement in the video whethere this is the camera moving around taylor swift when she is in the forrest surronded by the photos of events in the story and the amount of camera shots there are in the story itself capturing everything that is going on. Even when Taylor Swift is standing alone there are a mixture of medium and extreme close ups on her showing the emotions that she is showing while singing the song/ story. When the tempo of the music increases during the chorus the camera shots cut from one to the other alot quicker which helps capture what is going on in the story. An example of this is the flash backs to when the main character was a little girl and her parents are arguing like what her and her partner are doing in present time. Taylor Swift is shown throught the video lip synicing to the camera as if she is singing directly to the audience, which is called direct address.

Maisie Mae

Latest tracks by Maisie-Mae

Finally found a way to show you what Maisie sounds like as you can see Maisie has her own style and it has been hard to link her to similar products. This soundcloud has helped us show what we would like to use when we get a hard copy of the music so we can use it as we feel free. This has also allowd us to show that we do have songs that we are going to use rather than us just saying so.

As we have said before the song we like to do is the Nerd Love as it tells a story which can mean it becomes a narrative for the video.

Problems with youtube

At this moment of time we cannot give an example of maisie's song as we are unable to gain access to facebook during school and their are big risks with Maisie putting her songs on youtube.

The main problem is with software such as Orbit Downlader this is because, Orbit Downloader is a download manager for Microsoft Windows. One of the main features of the program is its ability to grab and download embedded Flash Video files from sites like YouTube, Dailymotion, Metacafe, etc. Orbit Downloader also accelerates downloads by acting as a peer-to-peer client, utilizing bandwidth of other users.

This means that other people could in fact take credit for Maisie's work and this is a major concern for her. While this issue is still present we cannot place anything with just her song up onto youtube until we have started placing our clips from when we start filming.

Similar Products to Maisie Mae

At this moment in time we can not show you what Maisie's music sounds like because of the issues with uploading to youtube and the risk of her music being downloaded illegally before it is placed on sale. Although this is an issue we can still show you what genre she links into and similar products that are already out in the music industry.

the three songs that Maisie has are similar to adele as they are only different beacuse they only have maisie playing the guitar and no other instruments within the song.

Another artist that is similar to Maisie is Leddra Chapman, a reasonably un hear of artist who has only really be noticed because of her song on youtube. Her song Summer Song is more like Maisie's as it maily consists of the acoustic guitar, yet whereas Maisie only relis on her guitar and voice.

The three songs that Maise currently has published on her facebook page are
Nerd Love
Comparrison of Us
High Horse

At this momment in time our favourate is Nerd Love as it tells a story so when it is used in a video it can act as a narrative to what is going on in the video itself.

Examples of band websites

Allong with the digipack we have to create for our coursework we also have to create a website for the artist that we have chosen to use in our music video. The following images show the different styles of which the websites can be and how they are set out. It can be difficult to sometimes create proffessional websites but our teacher mr devita has given us a website which allows you to recreate these styles of sites.

When we have found out what style of music we can easily slot our artist into we have can expand more on what type and style of website we will create.

What is a Digipack

Digipaks typically consist of a gatefold (book-style) paperboard or card stock outer binding, with one or more plastic trays capable of holding a CD or DVD attached to the inside. Since Digipaks were among the first alternatives to jewel cases to be used by major record companies, and because there is no other common name for Digipak-style packaging made by other companies, the term digipak or Digi-Pak is often used generically, even when the media holder is a hub or "Soft Spot" rather than a full plastic tray.

Digipak-style packaging is often used for CD singles or special editions of CD albums and the tall DVD Digipak (DVDigipak) is used as a premium package for DVDs and DVD sets. Because such packaging is less resistant to abrasion than jewel cases, it tends to show signs of wear relatively quickly. Licensed digipak manufacturers such as domestic U.S. printer and disc replicator Oasis Disc Manufacturing recommend coating the raw printed paper with a protective UV coating, thus ensuring greater longevity.

This was our initial ideas for our project, although we didnt complete the task how our teacher wished.
Mr Devita gave us the idea that we needed to actually get some ideas of who and what we would want to put in a music video. Seeings that we have got an artist lined up already we can now use her music to come up with an idea of how we can create a music video around her and whether our idea would work and whether it would be able to challenge the codes and conventions of a everday music video of the same genre.

Finding an artist

After looking threw our intial ideas which will be posted onto the blog soon. We found a girl in our school that is a really good arttist that has some music which fits in to are three ideas, Hevay metal, Indy pop and 80's rock styles. After seeing this we decided to sign her so she could only make a music video for us, the following image shows Maise signing the contract.

Different genres of music: Heavy Metal moodboard

Codes and Conventions: Goodwin's 6 features of a music video

1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics. (e.g. stage performance in metal videos, dance routine for boy/girl band, aspiration in Hip Hop).

2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. The lyrics are represented with images. (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

3. There is a relationship between music and visuals. The tone and atmosphere of the visual reflects that of the music. (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).

5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, mirrors, stages, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

6. There are often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc).

What is a Promo Video

A music video or song video is a short film integrating a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings. Although the origins of music videos date back much further, they came into prominence in the 1980s, when MTV based their format around the medium. Prior to the 80s, these works were described by various terms including "illustrated song", "filmed insert", "promotional (promo) film", "promotional clip" or "film clip".
Music videos use a wide range of styles of film making techniques, including animation, live action filming, documentaries, and non-narrative approaches such as abstract film. Some music videos blend different styles, such as animation and live action. Many music videos do not interpret images from the song's lyrics, making it less literal than expected. The long-running British TV show Top of the Pops began playing music videos in the late 1970s, although the BBC placed strict limits on the number of 'outsourced' videos TOTP could use. Therefore a good video would increase a song's sales as viewers hoped to see it again the following week. In 1980, David Bowie scored his first UK number one in nearly a decade thanks to director David Mallet's eye catching promo for "Ashes to Ashes". Another act to succeed with this tactic was Madness, who shot on 16 mm and 35 mm, constructing their clips as "micro-comedic" short films.
In 1974 the band Sparks filmed a promo video for their single "This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us" from the album Kimono My House

The long-running British Rock music show The Old Grey Whistle Test produced a number of pioneering videos made especially for the programme throughout the 70s and early 80s. These included a video of Frank Zappa's "City of Tiny Lights" made using claymation and videos made for performers such as Television, Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Pink Floyd and Mike Oldfield. The executive producer of The Old Grey Whistle Test was Mike Appleton. Derek Burbidge and Kate Humphreys directed and videoed many of the artists. The audio was always of prime importance. Gregg Baily was the recordist for the show on location. Although many assumed the bands were playing live, due to technical issues and the need to ensure performances were controlled, the bands often recorded the performance on the day of shooting prior to taping, and then mimed to this "live" track. Other directors and camera operators were Martin Pitts in the USA, and for England, John Metcalfe and Tim Pope and many others. Location shoots all over the world were an essential part of the programme. Martin Pitts Directed clips for the Bee Gees that aired on the show.

Intro

This year for the A2 i have decided to change groups and have now made a new group with George Griffin.
This years task is different from what we were asked to do in AS as we now get the chance to choose what we wish to do. The specification that we were given by our teacher allows us to choose out of three items to use with our music video that we have to create.

The specification shows that.
Mandatory

Create a  Promo Video for a Band

Two to be selected out of the following

a website homepage for the band

a cover for its release as part of a didipak (CD/DVD package)

a magazine advertisement for the digipak
